Mike Layward has worked in the arts for over 40 years, as a performer, musician, carnival designer, maker, puppeteer, producer, director and live artist. He has worked across Europe and India.
Mike has been the Artistic Director of DASH since 1999 and has been instrumental in DASH gaining a national reputation as the leading disability visual arts organisation in the UK.
Over the last seven years, DASH has worked with a number of leading mainstream regional and national galleries in England and Wales, commissioning new work by disabled artists.
DASH is now running a series of provocative symposia under the title ‘Awkward Bastards’; the next one will be at the mac birmingham in March 2017.
Mike has been a member of the Arts Council Midlands board since 2013 as a ‘critical friend ‘of the Arts Council and informing the board on issues around disability.
Mike’s philosophy is based on the belief that the arts can be a vehicle for social change and equality.
Mike has an MA in Activism and Social Change (Leeds University), 2009.
